Rubber flooring in 8 mm thickness handles dumbbells and bodyweight work in most home gyms, while heavy barbell drops want 15 mm or more under the loaded zone. That single number decides most of your purchase, because too thin and the subfloor takes the hit, too thick and you overpay for space you only deadlift in. Below are the three formats you can actually buy, what each costs in the US, and where each one earns its keep.
The three rubber flooring formats
Rubber gym flooring comes as interlocking tiles, continuous rolls, or stall mats. Interlocking tiles snap together like a puzzle and run roughly $2 to $5 per square foot. They suit a spare-room corner where you want to floor a defined platform and pull it up later without tools.

Rolled rubber covers large continuous areas and costs about $1.50 to $4 per square foot depending on thickness. For a tidy spare-room or basement gym with dumbbells, a bench, and bodyweight work, 8 mm interlocking tiles give the cleanest result and pull up when you move.
For a large dedicated room where looks matter, rolled rubber in 8 to 15 mm gives the seamless commercial finish, provided you have a second person to lay it. Skip foam tiles for any real loading; they crater under weights and tear at the seams within months, so they belong in a kids' play area, not under iron. Does rubber flooring off-gas anything harmful? The smell is real but the off-gassing fades to negligible within a few weeks of ventilation.
